Sefer Yetzirah 3:1

The threo first elements, are typified by a balance, in one scale the merit and in the other the criminality, which are placed in equilibrium by the wonderful and unknown mystery, and are sealed by rings, or elementary circles, namely: air, water and fire emanated from them, which gave birth to progenitors, and these progenitors gave birth again
