6 * τρώγω prop., of animals, to gnaw, munch, crunch (Hom., al.). Of men, to eat raw food, as vegetables, nuts, etc. (Hdt., al.). In late vernacular, simply to eat (= ἐσθίω ): Mt 24:38 , Jo 6:54 , 56 , 57 , 58 13:18 (LXX ἐσθίων ) (v. Kennedy, Sources , 82, 155; MM, xxv).†
